It deserves a straight answer instead of a sales pitch, so here’s how the timeline breaks down, phase by phase, based on labs we’ve built and run.

How long does the space buildout and clean-room work take?
The space buildout is usually the longest single phase, because it depends on physical construction: framing, sealed surfaces, air handling, plumbing, and the clean-room work that makes the transfer space actually clean.
This is the phase most affected by things outside the lab itself. Permitting timelines, contractor availability, and the state of the room you start with all move the date. A clean shell with good bones goes fast. An old room with the wrong power and no ventilation takes longer, because you’re fixing the building before you build the lab.
The clean-room work is the part you can’t rush. Sealed, wipeable surfaces. HEPA filtration and positive pressure in the transfer room. A gowning area at the entrance so nobody carries the outside world into your cleanest space. This is the foundation your program stands on, and cutting corners here shows up months later as contamination you can’t explain.
When do equipment install and media setup happen?
Equipment install and media setup happen as the space nears completion, often overlapping the tail end of the buildout so you’re ready to work the moment the room is clean.
Long-lead equipment gets ordered early, during or right after planning, so it isn’t the thing holding you up at the end. As the room comes together, the pieces go in:
- Laminar flow hoods, positioned away from traffic and drafts.
- The autoclave and wash station, kept in the dirty zone, away from sterile material.
- Growth room shelving and lighting, spaced for airflow and even light.
- Media prep bench, balance, and clean water access.
- Cold storage for genetics, accessible but outside the transfer room.
