Why a mother room is not a backup

Every operator who asks how to save their genetics is really asking this question, and cold storage is the answer that does not depend on a mother room staying healthy forever.

How long can genetics stay in cold storage?
Roughly 6 to 12 months in the vessel. Our SOP is to pull at 6 months, multiply, and put fresh cultures back, so the library is always well inside its viability window rather than riding the edge of it. That rotation is the whole discipline, and it is scheduled and tracked rather than remembered.
Is this the same as cryopreservation?
No. Cold storage holds living cultures in slow growth, ready to reactivate, which fits most commercial operations. Cryopreservation is deeper and more specialized; we will tell you if your library actually needs it.
Can you back up genetics that are already in my mother room?
Yes, once they are clean. We initiate your cultivars into tissue culture, verify them clean of HLVd and other pathogens by qPCR, and bank the clean Gen-0 lines, so you are preserving healthy genetics, not the problems that live in a mother room.
What happens if we lose power?
Slow-growth cold storage is not a freezer full of irreplaceable material, which is the point. Cultures are living and held at low temperature, so a short outage is survivable, and the library is a backup of lines you also hold in production. We build the storage plan around that: redundancy where it matters, and a rotation that means no single vessel is the only copy of a cultivar.
How many cultivars can we bank?
More than most operations think, because the footprint per cultivar is small. Cold storage holds a library in a fraction of the space a mother room needs for the same genetics. We size it to your library and your growth plan rather than to a fixed shelf count, and we have preserved 250+ cultivars coast to coast working this way.
How fast can we get a cultivar back out?
Recovery is not instant, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Material comes out of slow growth, gets multiplied back up, and moves through rooting and hardening on the normal timeline. What cold storage buys you is that the cultivar still exists at all. The alternative to a few months of rebuild is losing the genetics permanently.
Do we need a separate room for it?
Usually not a separate room, but it does need controlled conditions and its own space in the lab plan. We scope it as part of the layout rather than bolting it on afterward, because storage that shares a bench with active work is how cross-contamination starts.
