Why standard cleanup does not work

You cannot spray it out, and you cannot test it out.

Testing tells you which plants are infected. It does not clean them. Tool sterilization and isolation slow the spread, but by the time you see the dudding, the viroid is already systemic inside your elite cultivars. The only method proven to remove it is meristem culture: isolating the tiny meristematic dome at the growing tip, ahead of where the viroid has reached, and regenerating a clean plant from it.

Is HLVd the same as HpLVd?

Yes. HLVd and HpLVd are two abbreviations for the same pathogen, hop latent viroid. We write HLVd. Some testing labs and growers write HpLVd. It is the same viroid, the same yield loss, and the same cleanup through meristem culture.

Can tissue culture really remove HLVd?

Yes. Meristem culture is the only method proven to eliminate HLVd from an infected cultivar. You isolate the clean meristem, regenerate the plant from it, and verify the result by qPCR.

Do you offer HLVd remediation as a service?

Yes. We remediate HLVd, also written HpLVd, in your facility and on your cultivars, and we train your team to keep new genetics clean, so the clean-stock program is something you own and run.

How long does HLVd cleanup take?

It runs on the state of your library. Meristem isolation, regeneration, and qPCR verification take months, not weeks, and we scope the timeline with you on the consultation.

How do we know a line is actually clean?

Because it is tested, not assumed. Every candidate line goes through qPCR screening, and clean means a confirmed negative result on record rather than a plant that looks healthy. Results are logged per cultivar with the lab report attached, so the clean-stock call has a dated history behind it you can go back to.

Can you clean a cultivar we only have a couple of plants of?

Often yes, and this is exactly when it matters most. Meristem work starts from a very small amount of tissue, so a cultivar down to its last few plants is usually still recoverable. Tell us early rather than after the last plant declines.

What if only some of our cultivars are positive?

That is the normal case, and it is why we test before we treat. Cleaning every line when three are infected wastes months. The screen tells you which cultivars need remediation, which are clean and should be banked before they are exposed, and which are not worth carrying forward.

Will cleaned plants perform differently?

Better, usually, and that surprises people. Removing HLVd lifts a suppression the plant has been growing under, and meristem culture also resets the epigenetic decline that accumulates from years of cutting from cuttings. Growers tend to describe the result as the cultivar performing the way it did when they first selected it.
